CM/ECF NEXTGEN Information – District of Nevada (2024)

CM/ECF NEXTGEN Information – District of Nevada (1)

About NextGen

The Federal Judiciary has developed a Next Generation (NextGen) Case Management/Electronic Case Files (CM/ECF) system that will allow attorneys to use the same account for both PACER and electronic case filing access. E-filers will be required to use an individual PACER login and password for access to the electronic filing system.

The U.S. District Court for the District of Nevada is live on NextGen as of March 28, 2022.

The username and password an e-filer used prior to March 28, 2022, to access the Court’s CM/ECF system will not work. You must log in with PACER username and password, and link your old account to PACER. See linking instructions.

What is New in NextGen

One key feature of NextGen is “Central Sign-On”, a new functionality that will allow attorneys, and others with permission to electronically file, to maintain one account across all NextGen courts (appellate, bankruptcy, and district). E-filers will be able to use one login and password to e-file in every NextGen court where they have been granted e-filing privileges, rather than having to remember a separate login and password for each individual court. The same login and password will be used to access the Public Access to Court Electronic Records (PACER) system.

Requirements for NextGen

E-filers must do the following to file in NextGen:

  • Obtain your own individual PACER account or upgrade your existing individual PACER account.
  • Know your current District of Nevada CM/ECF login and password (if unknown, reset password).
  • View the Preparing for NextGen Flowchart and complete the instructions.
  • After the court installs NextGen on March 28, 2022 – Link your PACER account with your District of Nevada CM/ECF filing account. Please follow these instructions.

CJA Panel Attorneys

CJA Panel Attorneys will need only one PACER account for filing and viewing in NextGen. If you have a separate exempt CJA account now, those exempt privileges will need to be added to your individual upgraded PACER account.

Frequently Asked Questions

aHow do I know if I have an upgraded PACER account? (Feb 1, 2022)

Upgraded PACER accounts have usernames that are at least 8 characters. You may have upgraded your PACER account recently if you practice before another court that already has migrated to NextGen, such as the Ninth Circuit. If your username is 6 characters, you do not have an upgraded account. Go tohttps://www.pacer.govand click on Manage My Account to upgrade your PACER account. You will see an “Upgrade” link if your account needs to be upgraded.

aI already created an individual upgraded PACER account when another court made the switch to NextGen. Do I need another PACER login for Nevada? (Feb 1, 2022)

No, you only need one PACER account. With NextGen Central Sign-On, a single PACER login is used across all other NextGen courts. After you link your PACER account to your Nevada CM/ECF account on March 28, 2022, you will be able to log in using your existing PACER account credentials.

aI am a CJA attorney. After Nevada goes to NextGen, how do I view documents without being charged? (Feb 1, 2022)

When you registered your PACER account, you should have checked a box indicating you are CJA counsel. If that was done, you will have an option within NextGen to toggle back and forth between exempt and non-exempt. This is done through Utilities. It defaults to non-exempt, so each time you login, if you are doing CJA work, you will need to go to Utilities and check “Change PACER Exemption Status.”

Instructions are posted to the NextGen page of our website.

If you believe you may not have checked the CJA box when registering for your PACER account, you will need to contact PACER.

aI linked my account when the Court of Appeals or another District or Bankruptcy Court converted to NextGen. Do I have to link my account again? (Feb 1, 2022)

Yes, once the District of Nevadais live on NextGen, you must link your PACER account to your District of NevadaCM/ECF e-filing account before you can file in this Court.

aMy law firm uses a shared PACER account. Can we continue to use that account? (Feb 1, 2022)

Not for e-filing. Each attorney must have an individual PACER account to use for electronic filing in NextGen. The law firm can create a PACER Administrative Account (PAA) to manage the billing for all the individual attorney accounts. Staff members who share a PACER account for read-only access to view documents may continue to share an account.

For more information on setting up a PAA, please reviewPACER Administrative Account User Manual. To register for a PAA, visithttps://www.pacer.gov/reg_firm.html.

aWhat happens to my CM/ECF account after the court transitions to NextGen the end of March 2022? (Feb 1, 2022)

After the Court upgrades to NextGen, you must link your current CM/ECF account to your PACER account. After the accounts are linked, you will no longer use your CM/ECF username or password to file in this Court.
