- Joe Root has now scored 2,555 runs in Test matches between India & England - the highest of all players, going past Sachin Tendulkar’s tally of 2,535 runs.
- England ended their first innings with a run rate of 3.81 runs per over. In 19 Tests since Brendon McCullum took over, this is only the fourth time they’ve scored at less than four runs per over in their first innings.
- India scored 50 in 6.3 overs - their fastest fifty in the first innings in 245 Tests since the start of 2000. Previous best - 6.5 overs v Sri Lanka at Colombo (PSS) in August 2008 with Virender Sehwag & Gautham Gambhir opening.
- Jack Leach has now dismissed Rohit Sharma on five occasions in Tests. Only Nathan Lyon (nine) & Kagiso Rabada (seven) have dismissed him more often.
- In 14 first-class matches in India, Yashasvi Jaiswal has now scored 1,763 runs at an average of 83.95 with eight hundreds & three fifties. Out of his eight hundreds, he’s gone past 150 on five occasions.
'They played really well at the end there'
England opener Ben Duckett: "Obviously you want to make a few more but on that pitch it was quite tricky. There was consistent spin throughout the day. We were really happy.
"On another day we take three or four wickets and it is a completely different day. They played really well at the end there. You never know, we take two or three wickets in the morning and I can't see that pitch getting any better."
On his aggressive opening partnership with Zak Crawley: "We knew we would get a chance against seam. We always try to be positive and even more so today. We knew it would be tricky against spin."
On Tom Hartley: "It was incredible to see the way he went out and batted. The freedom he showed. They played him really well. They were positive. You know what Stokesy is like. He will throw him the ball today and back him all day."

India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin on TNT Sports: "It was interesting in the first session, there was a bit of moisture in the pitch which helped the spin. You can't really tell straight away but there was enough there in the first session to help us.
"Then it just slowed down, there wasn't much carry or pace. But we were extremely consistent so we were happy.
"I think 240 was a competitive total, that's how we felt. It was probably 20 or 30 more runs than we would have liked to concede. But the start that our openers gave us was brilliant. If someone can kick on tomorrow and get us a century, we will be in a very good position.
On Yashasvi Jaiswal: "That is the beauty of someone coming in and playing at this level, he has no baggage. He has had a lot of IPL success and a wonderful start to his first-class career.
"He has taken to Test cricket like a duck to water and he hasn't put a foot wrong. He has a very carefree approach and I certainly enjoyed watching some of the shots that he has played. He reminds me of watching Rishabh Pant, those two could be fun if they bat together!"

It was also interesting how Ben Stokes backed Tom Hartley to bowl, even though he was being attacked.
He wanted to show he had confidence in him and make him feel more comfortable at international level.
It can be a tricky place if you are whipped out of the attack after two overs.

There will be plenty of talk about England's spinners but it is worth a reminder that India's are exceptional. Ashwin and Jadeja are generational talents in particular, while Axar Patel is also a very experienced campaigner.
They have three world-class spinners who can also bat in the top eight and that is a remarkable luxury to have.
But Tom Hartley had a tough introduction to Test cricket. Jaiswal whacked his first ball for six and it didn't get any easier, his nine overs costing 63 runs.
Jack Leach was economical and took the big wicket of Rohit Sharma, while Mark Wood only bowled two overs of pace.

It was a little bit of an unfortunate day for Tom Hartley. None of England's spinners found turn like the India spinners did.
Leach was the only one who hit any rhythm or line and length. I am not sure why Wood only bowled two overs. You need to give him a longer go than that.

It was a chastening opening day for England's bowlers. What an innings from Jaiswal. We wondered about the inexperience of England's bowlers and he took them to the cleaners.
Jack Leach is going to have to bowl a lot of overs in this series.
The quality of England's spin bowlers has been demonstrated today.

The game has moved on very quickly, as was expected before the series even began. England started in their usual style through Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley before the spinners changed the course of the game.
Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel took eight wickets between them as England were 246 all out, largely thanks to captain Ben Stokes' counter-attacking 70.
It looked competitive given how much the pitch was turning, but England's spinners couldn't find the same threat and India cruised to 119-1 in 23 overs.

India's day.
There were glimmers of hope with the bat - the opening partnership between Duckett and Crawley and Ben Stokes' fifty after his knee surgery after the World Cup.
Stokes looked comfortable and played with ease. He was more assured as the innings went on.
But the assault from Jaiswal on Hartley has meant India end the day in a very good position on a surface that is only going to get harder to bat on.

India's day by a mile. It was a great attacking knock from Jaiswal. He really got hold of England's spin bowlers and did not let then settle.

And that concludes an enthralling first day of what promises to be a great series.
Yashasvi Jaiswal's majestic 76 not out from just 70 balls has led India to a very commanding position. The hosts trail by 127 runs with nine wickets in hand.

Jaiswal mirrors his partner's shot through the covers - it's absolutely nailed and looks destined for the boundary before a wild Mark Wood appears from nowhere and a brilliant scrambling dive saves two runs.
In the last over of the day, that is phenomenal commitment.

Shubman Gill hasn't matched Jaiswal's fluency so far but Rehan Ahmed gifts him a low full toss, and that'll help him find some rhythm.
He gratefully whacks it for his first four.

Jack Leach twirls his way through another tidy over, just one from it. While he's bowled nicely, even as England's most experienced spinner he just doesn't have that aura or threat in comparison to any of India's three.
We've only had one day of the series but the difference so far has been glaring.

Shubman Gill is chewing up plenty of balls here with seven from 34, but with India just advancing towards the close of play, it's understandable.

Rehan Ahmed pins Jaiswal on the pad which draws half an appeal, but England couldn't review it even if they wanted to.
The youngster then brings up India's 100 with a glorious drive through the covers for four. He has been a delight to watch.
