South Africa vs Afghanistan Highlights, T20 World Cup 2024 Semi Final Match Today: Cameos from Reeza Hendricks and Aiden Markram have taken South Africa to a nine-wicket victory over Afghanistan in the semifinal of the T20 World Cup 2024 at the Brian Lara Stadium, Tarouba in Trinidad
Earlier Marco Jansen’s three-wicket burst with the new ball essentially derailed the batting line-up of Afghanistan who got bowled out just 56 runs after skipper Rashid Khan won the toss and opted to bat first.
With the win, South Africa has qualified for the final of the T20 World Cup to be played on Saturday in Barbados. The winner of the game between India and England later in the evening at Guyana will join the Proteas to claim the title.

It was tough, tough for us as a team. We might have done better but the conditions didn't allow us to do what we wanted. That's how T20 cricket is, you need to be ready for all conditions. I think they bowled really well. I think we got good success in this tournament because the seamers bowled really well, you need good starts. I think we were unlucky with Mujeeb's injury, but our seamers and even Nabi bowled brilliantly with the new ball. That made our job easier as spinners. We have enjoyed this tournament. We will accept playing a semi-final and losing to a top side like Africa. It is just the beginning for us, we have the confidence and belief to beat any side. We just need to keep our processes. This has been a great learning experience for us. What we take from the competition is the belief. We know we have the skills, it is just about managing tough situations, pressure situations. Some work to be done, specially in the middle order to take the innings deep. As I said, it is always learning for our team and we have achieved good results so far but we will come back doing more hard work, specially in the batting department.

That's it Reeza Hendricks finishes the game and South Africa qualifies for the final of the World Cup. They remain unbeaten in the competition. It has been a clinical performance today showing they are cut above everyone. As per Afghanistan though the performance on the night has been great it has been an incredible campaign from them. They are good from the experience here and would hope to play better cricket and go a step further in the next ICC event but as of now congratulations to South Africa for reaching their first T20 World Cup final.

Change of tactic here from Afghanistan. Rashid has turned to Naib and Omarzai who are hitting harder lengths at the moment and the ball is misbehaving because of that. South Africans once again are looking scratchy here in the chase. They are playing and missing a few but both batters in the middle that is the most important part. Also, something that might be tricky for South Africa here is because of the nature of the game it might be a drawback for them going into the final as whoever gets into the final from India-England would have fought the harder contest and would be well equipped to handle more pressure.

Rashid Khan has overdone the seamer strategy and South Africa made the most of it. They have extracted 13 runs of Naveen's third over now which essentially has killed the game. Rashid Khan has brought himself into attack it might be a bit too late for him. One more thing that has been noticeable is the field sets from Rashid have been not as sharp as Markram's. Also, the pitch has settled down now and there is not the same amount of seam moment which was there in the first half of the innings.

This is a good start from Afghanistan if looked at in isolation given what they have to defend they need to keep chipping away with wickets. Markram and Reeza Hendricks who are in the middle have had an up-and-down tournament so far and they have a chance to finish not out in the end and get some confidence and runs under the belt going into the finals. Also,, it might be time for Rashid Khan to introduce himself. Yes, the wicket has helped the seamers but the leggie is their strike weapon and with two right-handers in the middle they might struggle to pick him.

There is the first wicket the ball moves back in De Kock tried to play an ugly swipe across the line and got himself bowled. This is the start Afghanistan wanted first up with the ball. Wasn't expecting that. We wanted to come out and hit our straps, continuing in the same vein and today it just happened for it. The ball was moving around quite a bit. We just bowled in the right areas, with good energy and reaped the rewards. It was about doing your best every game, nothing different for today. Sometimes you bowl well and don’t get the results, sometimes you bowl well and don’t get the results. I’m glad things are going our way. We believe this is the team to win a World Cup. Why play if you don’t believe it?

Shamshi picked the third wicket and that's the end of the Afghanistan innings. They have capitulated for just 56 runs here in Trinidad. This has been top-class bowling performance from South Africa. Marco Jansen has set the tone with the new ball and then the Rabada-Nortje pace duo capitalized on the initial good work. Shamshi in the end did not have much to do but he too ended up with a three-wicket haul. Afghanistan will need someone to bowl the spell of their lifetime to even make this a close contest. Shamshi picked up Noor Ahmed as well this time Afghanistan would have felt a bit hard done by. The ball to the naked eye looked like was drifting down the leg stump however, was given out by the umpire, and on ball tracking it was marginally clipping the leg stump. As we update Nortje picks Rashid Khan which ends the hope of Afghanistan at least having a chance to get near the 100 mark. It should not be much of a chase to South Africa here this might be over in the Powerplay as well if Afghanistan won't get their lines and lengths right.

Things have settled down for the last 10 minutes or so in the game. Both Rashid Khan and Karim Janat have been lot more circ*mspective and are playing each ball on its merit. Now Markram has turned to his spin option Tabriz Shamshi. This is going to be an interesting passage of play while Afghanistan try and extract runs of spinners they also need to make sure that they do not lose any wickets. As we update Tabriz Shamshi picks up Karim Janat the batter missed a straight one and was given out on-field however, the batter sent it upstairs to find out two reds and one umpire call on wickets hitting.

Anrich Nortje comes in and picks Omarzai. The panic seems to now completely set in the Afghanistan team. Now it is falling apart for Afghanistan. Kharote tried to pull the ball on the leg-side and gloved it to the keeper. Jansen picked up now his third wicket. Afghanistan have now lost five wickets in the Powerplay. The pitch is misbehaving a bit now an odd ball is bouncing a little more but fortunately for Afghanistan, there is no invariable bounce yet which might come into play once the ball gets softer. The problems will only increase for Afghanistan once Anrich Nortje comes into a bowl. He will bowl at quicker pace and the Afghanistan batters need to be on their toes to make decisions.

Once again it is the leg-slip and conventional slip that seem to have messed up with the footwork of the Afghan batter he was hoping for either of delivery and Jansen delivered an orthodox top-of-off-stump delivery which Gulbadin Naib missed. It is a fabulous start for South Africa. They have come in with plans to counter Gurbaz and it worked out. Markram had a slip and leg-slip in place to sow the seed of doubt on batter that Jansen can either ball an out-going delivery or an in-coming delivery. This messed up his foot moment and Jansen too was clever with the mixing of his deliveries and eventually pitched one up to the batter on off-stump which Gurbaz drove and the ball went straight to slip David Miller. Dream start this for South Africa in the semifinal here. They have picked the price wicket of Gurbaz.

KG has never bowled so late in an innings, he came onto bowl in the 18th over of the innings. We need to stay in the moment and do our best. It’s very important, we have been playing around with Shamsi, Baartman has also missed some games. You don’t exactly know how the wicket is going to be, it’s about being as smart as possible. (On how does Franchise cricket help) It definitely does, not everyone plays everyone, some experienced players also don’t play other experienced players, it’s great to get footage, it definitely does help.
